We Wore Our Own Jewelry Every Day for Six Months. Here Is What Happened to Our Reactive Skin.

Most jewelry brands tell you a piece is hypoallergenic. We needed to know it, because our own skin does not give second chances. This is an honest account of wearing 14K gold plating over 316L surgical steel every day for six months, on skin that reacts to almost everything else.

Why we could not just trust the label

The people who make Caeli have reactive skin. Not mild sensitivity. The kind where a gold-plated chain leaves a red line by lunchtime, where the back of an earring turns an earlobe sore within a day, where almost nothing except solid gold has ever been comfortable to wear. So when we set out to build jewelry, the word "hypoallergenic" on a label meant nothing to us. We have been let down by that label too many times.

The reason it fails so often is simple. Most jewelry that calls itself hypoallergenic is gold plating over a brass base, and brass commonly contains nickel, the most frequent cause of contact reactions. Once the thin plating wears, the base metal sits against warm skin all day, and the reaction begins. We wanted to remove that risk at the source, not paper over it with a word.

Why we built on 316L surgical steel

Every Caeli piece is built on 316L surgical steel with a 14K gold finish. 316L is the grade used in medical and marine settings because it is highly resistant to corrosion and is documented as a low nickel release material, which is exactly why it is the standard for jewelry meant for sensitive skin. The gold gives you the warmth and the look. The steel beneath it is what your skin actually has to live with.

If you want the full materials breakdown, we wrote two detailed guides: nickel allergy and jewelry and the complete guide to hypoallergenic jewelry.

The six-month test

When the first pieces arrived in December 2025, we did not photograph them and put them in a drawer. We put them on and left them on. The rule was simple: wear them through ordinary life and do not baby them.

Worn daily since the first samples arrived. Slept in. Showered in. Worn through workouts, hot summer days, hand-washing, lotion, and perfume. Necklaces layered against the neck for hours. Studs and huggies left in around the clock. Rings never taken off.

This is the exact pattern that has always broken other jewelry for us within days. It is the real test, not a careful one.

What we watched for

We were looking for the early signs we know too well: redness at the contact point, itching or a warm sting, dryness or flaking, any green mark on the skin, and any change in the pieces themselves, such as the gold dulling, the finish lifting, or tarnish at the clasp. We checked at the points that fail first, the back of the earring, the clasp against the nape, the inside of the band.

The honest result

Six months of daily wear, and our skin stayed calm. No red line under the necklace. No sore lobes from the studs. No green on the finger from the rings. The pieces themselves held their finish through showers, sweat, and sleep, with no tarnish at the clasps.

That is the only reason we felt right releasing them. We will not put our name on anything we would not wear every day on our own reactive skin, and we already have.

One honest note

Every person's skin is different, and a severe metal allergy deserves real care. Our experience is ours, not a medical promise. If your skin reacts strongly or a piercing looks infected, please see a doctor or a professional piercer. What we can tell you is what we built, what we tested, and what happened.
